John W. Longshore, Ph.D., FACMG
Director of Molecular Pathology
Ph.D. Medical Genetics,
Clinical Molecular Genetics
During his undergraduate work at Georgia Tech, Dr. Longshore performed extensive research in molecular biology and developmental genetics in the lab of Dr. Jung Choi. He completed his doctoral degree in medical genetics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham where his dissertation involved the expansion of trinucleotide repeats and genetic disease. During this time, Dr. Longshore developed a focal interest in the molecular diagnosis of genetic disease while receiving additional training in cytogenetics, biochemical genetics, molecular genetics, population genetics, genetic counseling and the clinical evaluation of patients with a genetic disorder. Following his doctoral study, Dr. Longshore completed fellowship training in clinical molecular genetics at the Greenwood Genetic Center in South Carolina where his primary work included research on the fragile X and FRAXE syndromes. In 1996, Dr. Longshore was named Director of the Diagnostic Molecular Genetic Laboratory at the Greenwood Genetic Center. Dr. Longshore joined Celligent Diagnostics and Carolinas Pathology Group in 2001. He serves as the Director of Molecular Pathology for Carolinas Laboratory Network - the only Molecular Laboratory in the region. His primary responsibility is the supervision of the Molecular Pathology Laboratory, a state-of-the-art facility providing testing in the areas of molecular genetics, molecular virology and molecular oncology. Dr. Longshore is a diplomate of the American Board of Medical Genetics in Clinical Molecular Genetics and is an active member of the American College of Medical Genetics, the American Society of Human Genetics and the Association for Molecular Pathology. He holds numerous adjunct faculty appointments and frequently lectures at medical schools across the country.
