Dr. Ballinger is a graduate of the University of Florida Medical School and completed residency training at the University of Florida Affiliated Hospitals. Following his residency, Dr. Ballinger served as Professor of Pathology, Chief of the Division of Neuropathology and Medical Director of the Neuropathology Laboratory at the University of Florida Medical School. In this capacity, he was responsible for diagnostic pathology services that included neurosurgical and neuromuscular pathology as well as neuropathology consultations. He has been involved in tumor biology and served as a Visiting Fellow in the lab of Dr. Judah Folkman at Harvard University School of Medicine. Dr. Ballinger also served as Medical Director of the State of Florida Brain Bank and directed the Neuropathology Fellowship Training program and supervised neuropathology training for residents in pathology, neurosurgery and neurology as well as for medical students at the University of Florida. Dr. Ballinger relocated to Charlotte in 1991 when he joined Carolinas Pathology Group and Celligent Diagnostics as Chief of Neuropathology and electron microscopy. He also serves as Medical Director of Surgical Pathology for Carolinas Laboratory Network. Along with Dr. James Dollar, Dr. Ballinger provides comprehensive consultative services in the areas of neuropathology and nerve and muscle pathology.
