Dr. Lipford grew up in Charlotte and is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is a graduate of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and completed residency training in anatomic pathology and laboratory medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital. While at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Lipford was an American Cancer Society Fellow in surgical pathology and Chief Resident of anatomic pathology. Following his residency training, he pursued a fellowship in hematopathology at the National Institutes of Health under Dr. Elaine Jaffe. He is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology by the American Board of Pathology. Dr. Lipford joined Celligent Diagnostics and Carolinas Pathology Group in 1982. He was instrumental in the development of the Flow Cytometry Lab at Carolinas Medical Center and served as the director-in-training of the HLA Lab. He received certification from the American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics as an HLA Laboratory Director in 1991. Dr. Lipford became Medical Director of the Clinical Laboratory and Chief of the Department of Pathology at Carolinas Medical Center in 1989, and now serves as Medical Director of Carolinas Laboratory Network, the organization created by the consolidation of Carolinas HealthCare System's laboratory operations at its four acute-care hospitals.
