Born in Chicago, Illinois, Dr. Smith grew up in Green Bay, Wisconsin. A graduate of the University of Iowa School of Medicine, he completed residency training in anatomic and clinical pathology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver. He holds fellowship training in surgical pathology at Washington University Medical Center/Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. He has additional fellowship training in dermatopathology from Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Dr. Smith joined Carolinas Pathology Group and Pathology Associates Services, now Celligent Diagnostics, in 1999. He serves as Medical Director of the Clinical Laboratory at Carolinas Medical Center- Pineville. In addition to directing the services of the Clinical Lab, Dr. Smith is a faculty presenter in the lymphatic mapping and sentinel lymph node biopsy courses offered through the Carolinas Laparoscopic and Advanced Surgery Program. He has also been instrumental in the development of the services available through Celligent Diagnostics, and collaborates with Dr. Mack Sexton to provide comprehensive expertise and services in the area of dermatopathology.
